T has a baby

T has a baby.
The baby has croup.
The baby coughs and coughs.
The coughing wakes T.
And the baby is held.

The baby is held.
Cuddled close.
The baby breathes in the cold night air.
His swollen air passages shrink a bit.
And the baby drifts back into fitful slumber.
Only to awaken at the next coughing fit.
Over and over.
This can't be good.
The croupy baby needs sleep.

The croupy baby needs sleep.
Rest will help.
If the baby will sleep, he will recover.
But the baby coughs and coughs.
And the baby wakes up.
Over and over again.
With a scary sounding barking cough.
And the baby needs a doctor.

The baby sees a doctor.
The doctor hears the croupy cough.
The doctor prescribes a steroid.
The steroid will help shrink the air passages.
But the steroid causes insomnia.
And the baby does not sleep.
Ever.
So neither does anyone else.
Because the baby is sick.

The baby is sick.
The baby wants his mommy.
And if the baby cannot see his mommy, he cries.
So T cannot lie down.
Because the baby will not permit it.
The baby wants to lie down and gaze at T.
Who must be sitting up.
If T lies down, the baby cries.
If the baby is not lying down, then the baby wants to be held upright.
And T complies.
Because she loves the croupy baby.

T loves the croupy baby.
But she has a migraine.
And she is very very tired.
T has been up for the past two nights with croupy baby.
And croupy baby awoke today at 4:00 a.m.
And cried.
And cried.
And T held the baby.

T holds the baby.
Stares deeply into his eyes.
And tells the baby how much she loves him.
And the baby smiles and coos.
Stuffed up and sickly, but no longer struggling for breath.
And life is good.

Life is good.
For the baby.
But if T doesn't get some sleep soon, her head will explode.
Migraines are like that.
And a babysitter is not an option.
Because the baby is sick.

The baby is sick.
So T sits upright.
Where the baby may gaze at her.
And she tries to make him feel better.
As her head throbs.
Someday, the baby will sleep.
And then, T will sleep also.
But for now, sleep will wait.
Because T has a baby.

T has a baby.

I thought I saw you

I thought I saw you the other day,
But I really wasn't sure.
A shadow in among the fray.
Passed by me in a blur.

I thought I saw you the other day.
I didn't know what to feel.
A billion shades of dappled grey,
As many ways to heal.

I thought I saw you the other day.
I guess you're doing fine,
'Cause most things just work out okay
If only in my mind.

I thought I saw you the other day.
Thought maybe I should speak,
But I didn't know what I should say.
Tired. Feeling weak.

I thought I saw you the other day.
A chance for me to grow.
But I turned and walked the other way
Preferring not to know.

The above poem is apropos of nothing. It was inspired by Mama Kat over at Mama's Losin' It, whose writer's workshop for the week included a prompt to begin a post with the words "I thought I saw". So there ya go!

Head on over. Check out the writer's workshop prompts for the week. Read the many posts. Write one of your own and link up. Come on. You know you want to. It's fun.

Your true colours

I am from my piano,

from Yamaha and Hewlett Packard.

I am from the grey bungalow with the big backyard and the service station across the street. Tidy, cute; the scent of gasoline.

I am from the diefenbachia, lily, rainbow, the willow, rose, rock. Grey and speckled, hard and rough, both smooth and jagged by turn, with tiny flecks of bright gold.

I’m from big Christmas gatherings and type A personalities,

from Ruth and Jan.

I’m from hard working overachievers, and exhibits of strength, faith, and hope through adversity,

From "clean your room" and "your brother and sister never fought like this".

I’m from God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit. The three-in-one. Baptist.

I’m from Scotland by nature, but elsewhere by nurture,

From frozen turkeys and barbecued hamburgers.

From the bright but uneducated businessman who owned his own service station, and then went back to school as an adult, changing his path through intense hard work, because what he really wanted was to teach highschool.

And from the addict. A man who loved to skydive, who one day spontaneously combusted and ended it all with one shot.

Photos in boxes and albums; some in scrapbooks, slideshows, quilts, and various frames. China cabinets with pretty glass and crystal, and chests of drawers containing writing and childrens' artwork. Cabinets on an acreage and computerized family trees. Treasures in every cupboard. My past, my present, my future. Every bit of it precious, priceless, and irreplaceable.

I am from my piano.

The above was inspired by my friend, The Morgan. Apparently, it was a proposed school assignment from a teacher's website originally entitled "Where I'm From" ... and I'd love to read yours too. So follow the structure and create a poem. Let me know how it turns out.

Edited Sept 15/08:

I have now learned that the original "Where I'm From" poem and form is by George Ella Lyon. Visit her site, and you can read the original version and listen to the audio, as well as find some other resources for writing. (And maybe even get her to give a workshop at your child's school!)

I am doing this

I am doing this.
I am doing this for a purpose.
I am doing this for my son.
I am doing this for my family.
I am doing this for myself.

I am on the right track.
Finally, I am on the right path.
If I keep doing this, things will change.
Things will happen.
Things will improve.

There's a light.
I can see it.
But sometimes, it seems so distant.
And I just lose sight of it.
If only for a short while.

Focus.
Remember.
See.
Know.
Believe.

There is hope.
There is an end.
Just as there was a beginning.
Then, there will be laughter.
Nothing is as hopeless as it sometimes seems.

My car

My car is a fixer-upper.
Except that it's too old to fix up.
But my car has character.

My car was in an accident before I even got it.
Written off, and rebuilt.
Repainted.
My car has faded over time.
Now the front is coral.
Body is red, and back bumper is maroon.
My car is not beautiful.

My car has dents.
Big honkin' paint-scraped-off dents.
And one of the rear doors no longer opens.
Without strain.
Because of the dents.

My car has windows that don't roll down.
And it only blows mildly warm air.
When it's cold and wet out, the windows are prone to fog up.
Unless I use both hands.
Fight and curse.
Force the window to crack open.
Then, it's a bit better.
But I get rained on.

My car has a clock radio.
It's not so hot.
My car only gets bad a.m. radio.
On more than one occasion.
I have driven to work.
Listening to "The Name Game".
The clock is set to some preposterous time.
It's not that I can't tell time.
But the clock is set by disconnecting the battery.
Then you have to reconnect it.
At either noon or midnight.
So the time will be right.
And I can't be bothered.

My car has an interesting dashboard.
All of the dashboard lights are burnt out.
The gas gage doesn't work.
So we fuel according to mileage.
The tacometer is affected by the windshield wipers.
And the wipers only run on really-extra-super-fast.
But the temperature gage is starting to work again.
Knock wood.

My car has a leaky radiator.
We have tried to fix it.
Recently, we have given up.
Now, we just top it up with coolant when it's low.
It's a slow leak.
It doesn't bother us much.
But the pavement out front has dark patches.
Under my car.
I don't care.
I don't own the pavement out front.

My car is gutless.
It won't do more than 60 km/hr on a hill.
But it gets me where I need to be.
And I appreciate it.

My car is old.
And it lacks many finer luxuries.
But it is my car.
It runs.
All of its exterior lights work.
It has signal lights.
It comes equipped with mirrors.
It has a fully functioning battery.
It is red.
Or reddish.
Depending on where you look.
It takes me to work and home each day.
In rush hour.

I like my car.
I think it's charming.

But my car is, apparently, invisible.
I see no other explanation.
My car gets rear-ended every other month.
I would think that my car would stand out.
Given its rather unique appearance.
But it apparently does not.
It cannot be seen.
Except by me.
And other drivers.
But only after they have slammed into it.
Apparently.

Dear other drivers.
If you're going to hit me.
And injure my neck.
Could you please hit me at higher speeds.
So that there will be more damage to my car.
And I can claim my resultant injuries.
On your insurance.
Without raising eyebrows.
But no.
Instead, I must pay the chiropractor.
Out of my own pocket.
Each and every time.
At least I can be grateful for benefits.

I like my car.
I like other drivers.
I really do.
But my neck hurts.
Again.
And I must go and lie down now.

Conversations of the Car et al

On "The Smart Car"

H: If I wanted a 3 cylinder diesel engine, I'd buy a garden tractor! But I hope they feel really good about owning a Smart car and being able to save on the high cost of gasoline. Just curious, though, why they also have three SUVs parked in a line beside it??

**********

Well, the garage is being built. It was started yesterday. All four walls are already up. Materials are being delivered over time, and I guess the store felt it'd take longer to use up what we had; we're out of materials now, and have to take a break until we get the rest of the stuff. Hopefully, that will happen soon.

Stupid people delivered the wrong colour of shingles! Oh well; it will be fixed soon enough.

J starts "daycare" on Tuesday. I am nervous, but I think he'll enjoy it.

And The Cryptic presents:

Stressed.
Pouring rain.
Head full.
Too much.
Forgetting.
Everything.
Remember when.
Please, not again.
Tired.

A mood is

A mood is sometimes just there.
For no reason.
Sometimes random, without warning.
A change in the weather.
And you feel it.

You fight it.
You run, but it chases you.
Overpowering you.
It insists that it stay.
Takes hold.

The mood is nonsensical.
Tension release.
Extreme joy.
Sudden crash.
And the mood has its way.

**********

No more mood. Chocolate now. Chocolate good.

Baby poetry

I am Baby
Hear me roar.
I walk through the

'Cause I can!
So take that,
You!

Impatiently ... waiting ...

My exam results from the last class are supposed to be released on January 24. Foolishly optimistic, I keep checking the exam results page, hoping our results will be released early. It's happened before. Once.

The results are still
Not out. I want to know how
I did! One more week.

He Sleeps

Lying in centre of crib
Sideways
Arms upstretched;
Blankie spread beneath them
Fans out
Like angel wings.

So sweet.
So peaceful.
So dear.
So precious.
So perfect.

I love you, J. I hope you don't get cold tonight, lying on top of your blankie like that.

Moody Mama

Baby sleeping.
Daddy sweeping.
Mommy weeping.

I am in a mood. (Once more? Still? At this point, who can tell?) No good reason, and no good can come of it.

Missed swimming this morning. We had so much on the go this weekend, and just felt it didn't make a lot of sense to take time out to go to swimming, especially with the three other kidlets we go to see away ill today. No point. We'll register for more swimming in the new year. J likes swimming.

So this morning, we got an early start on some errands instead. Then J had a visit with his Grannie, and H helped his brother do some work on the house while I did a meager amount of studying and visited with H's mom. Much progress was made on the house, and I am happy about that, but unhappy with the amount of studying I accomplished. I must make up for it. Sometime.

Came home. Got new deepfreeze; a wonderful gift, which made us thankful.

H has been working on cleaning up the house, and I've been doing what I can, in between studying and caring for J, who is teething and fussy. Christmas party tonight, and Dottie's birthday party too. We'll try to attend both, but can make no promises. Tomorrow is going to be chaotic too, and will make today look calm and relaxed. It makes my head hurt just thinking about it.

Bad mood.
Grumpy and irritable.
Tres blah.

And miles to go before I sleep

It is odd, the things that spring to mind without warning. I was reflecting on how very tired I am, and how much stuff I have yet to do before I can relax. And then suddenly:

Stopping by Woods on a Snowy Evening
by Robert Frost

Whose woods these are I think I know.
His house is in the village though;
He will not see me stopping here
To watch his woods fill up with snow.

My little horse must think it queer
To stop without a farmhouse near
Between the woods and frozen lake
The darkest evening of the year.

He gives his harness bells a shake
To ask if there is some mistake.
The only other sound's the sweep
Of easy wind and downy flake.

The woods are lovely, dark and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep.

I remember reading Robert Frost many years ago, but the truth is, I didn't even remember this poem until just now. I like it, though. I find it calming, somehow.

"Cough" - A Haiku

Coughing from the chest.
Asthmatic; this can't be good.
Hacking up a lung.

***********

The doctor's office has no openings today. I need to phone tomorrow at 9:00 and try to get in then. (Their pre-booked spots are taken, but apparently they will open up more slots in the morning.) I can't afford the time away from my books, but I also can't afford to be sick for my exam. If I have to pick one of the two evils, my health must win out. It's bad enough now that I can justify seeking help. So off to the doctor I will go. I wish they could fit me in today.

I am thankful that neither H nor J appear to have caught this nasty, nasty cold as of yet. H's sinuses are acting up today, but he gets that from time to time and it may be unrelated; I really hope he doesn't get sick like this. And I hope it goes away soon. It hurts. Bad.

***********

J was so sweet yesterday. He napped in the afternoon for a number of hours; he was in his swing, which he thought was fun. (I remember when he hated that swing, but those days are long gone now.) This gave me an opportunity to get in some studying (when I probably should have been sleeping, trying to rest up and get better - my priorities are skewed just now, so sue me). I may be prepared for this exam yet.

On that note, exam prep is going reasonably well now. I am following the audio lecturer's advice in strategies for the long answer solutions (preparing financial statements) and that works pretty well. I am glad that we have the exam review audio lectures; I'd be totally lost without them. Using the lecturer's strategies, I just prepared a cash flow statement (one of my really tough areas) correctly and in a reasonable period of time! I feel quite pleased with myself this morning.

***********

J has tried a pretty good variety of fruits and veggies now. He still prefers vegetables to fruits. He is not a "sweets" kind of kid just yet, and his favorite food to date appears to be green beans. He tolerates bananas, but his favorite fruit is still pears. He tried avocado yesterday; he didn't really seem to have an opinion on it one way or the other. I like it, however, because it is easy to prepare!

His two bottom teeth are coming in nicely. Still no sign of teeth up top. And still no interest in sitting up, but he loves to roll around and "scoot" on his back by kicking his feet. He loves to explore objects with his hands and taste-test everything that comes his way. He enjoys being on his tummy, and he will lift up both his head and feet and balance on his stomach, using his hands for support. He rubs his eyes when he is tired, but he fights sleep for all he's worth.

I love him so much!

***********

I feel bad; I have many pictures to upload, but no time to do so until after my exam. Look for updates to the photos menu, possibly the first weekend in December. I make no promises, but I will try!

Free Falling

J is up late. Talking. And throwing his soother about. If we put him in his crib, he gets progressively louder. We are exhausted and are currently taking turns walking the floor with him.

Odd things occur to you when you are passing-out-tired and the baby won't let you sleep.

****************
Dear Mr. Petty:

Much as I generally enjoy your music, I must take issue with "Free Falling". While it is an excellent song in many respects, I cite the opening lines:

"She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus, and America too
She's a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses, and her boyfriend too"

Has it occurred to you that you have rhymed "too" with "too"? This is one of the worst rhyme schemes I have ever heard, and it has annoyed me for years. There is no shortage of words that rhyme with "too". Let's explore a few possible ways of completing this lyric without repeating the word "too" at the end, shall we?

Here is my "Top 40". Let's take it from "Loves horses":

  1. 'cause they make good glue
  2. they're so fun to shoe
  3. and cows that say "Moo"
  4. and homemade beef stew
  5. them horses can chew
  6. she once thought they flew
  7. and an actress named "Drew"
  8. and her boyfriend, Stu
  9. and cats; they say "Mew"
  10. she can play the kazoo
  11. and her boyfriend's canoe
  12. and the Great Gazoo
  13. and a bear named "Baloo"
  14. coo-coo-ca-choo
  15. she's contracted the flu
  16. and Little Boy Blue
  17. and Cindy-Lou Who
  18. and her floral mumu
  19. she can build an igloo
  20. for a price, she'll love you
  21. could you please buy a clue
  22. when she gets sick, she'll spew
  23. and a boy named "Sue"
  24. and playing "Taboo"
  25. and Seaworld's "Shamu"
  26. from Katmandu
  27. she's staging a coup
  28. she lives in a slough
  29. and good witches brew
  30. and the whole cast and crew
  31. bright with morning dew
  32. and of course, the Haiku
  33. Nanu Nanu
  34. and "The Taming of the Shrew"
  35. she invented "Yoo-hoo"
  36. and Dogpatch's "Shmoo"
  37. all shiny and new
  38. skinamarinky doo
  39. was that a kangaroo?
  40. but not Raj Pannu
I am reasonably certain that more suggestions will be forthcoming, but you see my point.

In short: Buy a rhyming dictionary, you twit!!

Sincerely,

T

Now, for a rousing round of "We Don't Know Your Debtor"

We don't know your debtor, so stop calling.
We don't know your debtor, for the third time in a week.
You can call throughout the year,
But there will be no "Michael" here.
And the fact that our surname's creative
Doesn't mean we're all related.
(We concur that it's unique,
But we aren't the one you seek.)
We don't know your debtor.
We don't know your debtor.
We don't know your debtor, and we're calling the police.

*****************
Seriously, folks. Three times now. And she sounded so surprised when I said that we didn't know him. For. The. Third. Time.

Honestly, the shared last name is just a terrible coincidence. Hardly a big one, either. I mean, if our last name was "Smith", no one would question it. It would not be assumed that we were somehow connected to every other "Smith" in North America.

Anyway, I toasted the skip tracer. And I asked her not to phone here again. I hope that will do the trick; if not, we may need to file a formal complaint. (Fortunately, my years of experience working in a collection agency mean that I know exactly how to do that.)

Fantastic.

Health nurse thinks it's croup.
H and I have caught J's bug.
We will all stay in.
